Arsenal news: Martin Keown heaps praise on Emile Smith Rowe

Martin Keown and Ray Parlour

Martin Keown is already seeing traits of Ray Parlour’s game in Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe.

Arsenal currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, three points off the top four, and Smith Rowe has played a starring role this season.

The talented 21-year-old has netted four goals in all competitions this but the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsdale have made plenty of headlines for their displays.

Former Gunner Keown believes Smith Rowe’s work ethic is reminiscent of Parlour, who won three Premier League titles with the north London side.

‘Ray was a player that probably never got the credit he deserved,’ Keown told the Evening Standard.

‘Ray didn’t stay out wide out all the time, he would tuck in, deep into midfield. I’ve seen Smith Rowe do that quite a few times.

‘It makes the team more complete, when you have the players that are looking to play with the ball and without.’

Arsenal have come a long way under Mikel Arteta since their opening league defeat to Brentford and a 5-0 hammering to Manchester City with players now buying into his tactics.

Many felt Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top four were slim at the start of the campaign but Keown feels if they can pick up points against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in the next month then opinions may start to change.

‘They are just three points off Man City, who thumped them 5-0, and we have to respect the turnaround,’ Keown added.

‘But Arsenal have difficult away games coming up, against Liverpool and Manchester United, and I think we will know a little bit more about what the clear targets are after that.

‘They’ve put themselves in a position to strike for Europe, but where they end up will be down to their consistency.’
