Covid-19: 167 new cases in Delta community outbreak across six regions

There are 167 new Covid-19 cases in the Delta community outbreak, as officials report two further deaths.

The Ministry of Health gave the update in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

Of the new cases, 142 are in Auckland, 17 are in Waikato, five are in Northland, one is in Bay of Plenty DHB, one is in Lakes DHB, and one is in Canterbury.

There are new cases in Auckland, Waikato, Northland, Bay of Plenty, MidCentral and Canterbury.

There are two new cases in the Bay of Plenty overall – one in Mt Maunganui and one in Tauranga.

The Tauranga case came in after the 9am reporting cut-off time and will be reported in Friday’s figures.

Interviews into the cases’ movements are ongoing, and any locations of interest will be published by the ministry as they are identified.

A case announced in Lakes DHB on Wednesday is officially reported in today’s figures.

A woman in her 80s has died at Middlemore Hospital, the ministry announced.

No further information would be released until conversations with her family have concluded.

Health officials also reported the death of a man in his 90s in North Shore Hospital, who had been living at the Edmonton Meadows Care Home in Henderson.

He was admitted to hospital with Covid-19 earlier this month, and had a number of underlying health conditions, the ministry said.

There are 85 people in hospital with Covid-19 on Thursday, down from 88 on Wednesday.

Six people are in intensive care or high-dependency care units.

The average age of those in hospital with Covid-19 is 51.

Data about the vaccination status of those in hospital is unavailable at this stage, so too are some figures around contact tracing and the number of cases infectious in the community, the ministry said.

There are five new cases in Northland: two in Dargaville, one in Whangārei, one in the Far North and one in Kaikohe. All are epidemiologically linked.

Cases of Covid-19 are “widespread” in Northland, and the ministry urged everyone in the region to remain vigilant.

There are 142 new Covid-19 cases in Auckland.

As of Thursday, public health staff are supporting 5010 people to isolate at home around Tāmaki Makaurau, including 2238 positive cases.
