Daniel Padilla is reluctant to let Kathryn Bernardo see his latest movie, Kun Maupay Man It Panahon.
That, despite his boast that his girlfriend gave him full support during the making of the move.
Kun Maupay Man It Panahon premiered in the 2021 Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, and was screened in 12 other international film festivals.
Soon, it will be seen in the Philippines as an entry in the 2021 Metro Manila Film Festival.
In an intimate Zoom interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and Push on Sunday, December 12, 2021, Daniel revealed his apprehension to take his “Bal” to the premiere of his movie in the country.
He said, “Nabanggit ko nga kasi na parang magkakaroon kami ng premiere.
“E, sinasabi ko parang, ‘Bal, sasama ka pa ba do’n?’ Hahaha! Kasi ako iyong nahihiya, e.
“Parang ako pa iyong, ‘Oh my goodness, parang hindi ko alam kung kaya…”
Apparently, Daniel has bigger reason than that he and Kathryn are not together in the movie.
He explained in the interview, “Iyon lang problema sa akin, parang hindi ko kayang panoorin iyong sarili ko.
“Parang after na lang, parang gusto kong lumabas, ‘O, kumusta?’ Alam mo iyong gano’n?”
According to Daniel, he has always been squirmy about seeing himself acting in the movies, even in movies he has done with Kathniel.
“Kahit naman may mga pelikula kaming magkasama, kagaya ng mga pelikula namin sa Star Cinema.
“Diyusko, alam niyo namang hiyang-hiya at awkward na awkward ako pagdating sa ganung sitwasyon, e, di ba?
“At saka kapag ayoko kasi pinapanood sarili ko parang laging, ‘Sana ginawa mo ito, DJ!’ Parang lagi kong inaano iyong sarili ko.”
Meanwhile, Kathryn has been insistent about going to the premiere of his movie, leaving Daniel without choice in the matter.
He said, “Pero siya iyong namimilit na, ‘Ano ka ba? Dapat nando’n ako.’
“So yeah, I think papanoorin niya. Hahaha! Magkasama kami. Mga dalawang oras siguro ako magbabanyo. Hahaha!
“Excited din naman ako na makita iyong finished product na ginawa namin.”
MOVIE MAKING IT TO MMFF
Kun Maupay Man It Panahon, Waray for the English phrase “Whether the Weather is Fine,” depicts the story of Miguel (Daniel), a son desperately looking for his mother Norma (Charo Santos-Concio) and childhood friend Andrea (Rans Rifol) after the devastation left by super typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban.
His search seems futile as another storm is about to hit Tacloban.
Worse for Miguel, he has to decide whether to continue looking for his loved ones or to leave town to save himself.
Being born and raised in Tacloban, Daniel was pleasantly surprised that the movie has made it to the Magic 8 of MMFF this year.
He said, “Nagulat din ako. Haha! Nagulat ako, e. Hindi ko rin na masyado naasahan, inasahan na, ah, makakapasok pa kami sa MMFF.”
He elaborated that this would be a perfect time for Filipinos to see the movie.
“Well, I think ito na siguro iyong tamang timing din, di ba, na mapanood natin iyong pelikula kasi siyempre, nakaikot na rin siya abroad sa iba’t ibang festivals, di ba?
“So, it’s the right time na mapanood na rin natin ngayon iyong pelikula na atin naman talaga.
“Na-appreciate nila sa ibang bansa. E, dapat lang nating din mapanood na dahil atin itong pelikula na ito, sa atin nanggaling, sa atin nangyari, sa atin nagmula.
“So iyon nga, I’m very excited na mapanood nila. Kasi, it’s very different, very beautiful, kaya yun.”
Daniel was especially proud that that the movie has won various awards abroad—the Youth Jury Prize at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Special Mention by the Jury at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico, and Best Director for Carlo Francisco Manatad at the London East Asia Film Festival in the United Kingdom.
He said, “Ako, first time ito sa akin, so I’m very humbled yet I’m very proud.
“Siyempre, pelikulang Pilipino ito, e. I mean naipakita natin sa kanila kung ano bang kaya nating gawin.
“Ano bang kaya nating i-offer, at nasaan na ba ang estado ng filmmaking ng Pilipino.
“So, I’m sure also na nabigla din naman talaga sila sa kaya nating gawin in terms of movie making, film industry natin.”
