Just call him the Bringer Of False Hope.
Leave it to a former Toronto sports hero — albeit of the baseball variety — to playfully pile on the Maple Leafs, a team currently facing criticism from all corners amid a frustratingly slow start to the NHL season.
If only Josh Donaldson — aka the Bringer Of Rain — could do for the hapless Leafs what he did for the Blue Jays during his productive few seasons in the Big Smoke, including an MVP season in 2015.
“Thank you to the @MapleLeafs for giving me the opportunity tonight to start in my first NHL game!! Ill be the first two way player to play in the MLB and NHL. Momma we made it,” Donaldson tweeted from his @BringerOfRain20 account.
The tweet includes Donaldson, who now plays for the Minnesota Twins, rocking a Maple Leafs jersey, skates and hockey gear while visiting the All Pro Source For Sports in Newmarket.
It’s true we’ve never seen him skate, but we do know the animated third baseman has enjoyed playoff success in Toronto — which can’t be said about the team that plays next to the Rogers Centre, at the Scotiabank Arena.
LeafNation was eager for the former Jays fan favourite to lace ’em up to help the beleaguered Buds.
“JD and Spezza on a line together would have more heart than some entire teams,” tweeted @Gdzacher.
City councillor Paul Ainslie — @cllrainslie — suggested: “the @MapleLeafs should sign you to a short term contract!!!”

It’s not clear what position J.D. would be angling for but Twitter user @Armstrong had a suggestion.
“Can you play defence? Let’s get ya in the lineup ASAP.”
