Atletico Madrid will reluctantly sanction Kieran Trippier’s move to Newcastle United in January provided the Magpies stump up £15m for the England international and the club are able to find a replacement before he leaves.

Trippier, 31, joined Diego Simeone’s side in 2019 in a £20m move from Tottenham and he lifted the La Liga title with the Spaniards last term.

The defender, though, was keen on a return to England and he stated his desire to the club’s heriachy to join Manchester United.

At that point, Atletico were holding out for more than £25m for the former Burnley defender and the Red Devils were unwilling to stretch that far.

But Trippier’s desire to return hasn’t diminished and newly-rich Newcastle are keen on capitalising on his situation by bidding for him next month.

And the good news for the Magpies is that the Daily Mail claim Atletico are willing to let Trippier go, provided Newcastle’s bid is in the region of £15m and the club can sign a replacement.

It remains to be seen if Manchester United would re-enter the race for Trippier but given Diogo Dalot’s form it seems unlikely.

Trippier’s contract was extended by 12 months last summer, meaning he has 18 months to run on his existing deal.

Atletico therefore feel time is running out for them to get an acceptable fee for the defender, given his desire to leave the Spanish capital.
