Fire and Emergency New Zealand central communications shift manager Carlos Dempsey said the service had responded to more than 30 call-outs across Feilding on Monday night.

Crews were responding from Feilding, Bunnythorpe and the Palmerston North area, Dempsey said. The calls related to flooding to properties, and the service was not aware of any reports of injury or blocked access.

“We’re not being inundated, but we’ve had quite a few calls in the area,” Dempsey said about 9pm Monday. The first flooding report was made to the service about 7pm Monday, Dempsey said. Since then crews had been working to triage jobs, and attend high-priority call-outs.

About 9pm Monday there were no call-outs waiting for assistance. “We’re waiting for the weather to stop,” he said.

Manawatū District Council communications officer Ben Caldwell said in an earlier phone interview that there had been significant rainfall across the township on Monday night.

There has been significant surface flooding in Feilding after downpours of rain.

A downpour not long before 7pm caused surface flooding around Feilding, and several residents – from at least six households – had made reports of flooding to the council. A second downpour about 8pm made existing flooding worse.

Most flooding reports were from known hotspots for flooding, Caldwell said.

A weather watch was in place for an area further north of Feilding on Monday due to Tropical Cyclone Ruby, Caldwell said, but it was “not to this extent”. The council’s emergency response team was investigating call-outs to properties about 8.30pm Monday.

There were also calls about blocked drains. The council’s contact centre had “picked up” with reports of flooding and other weather-related inquiries as the evening turned to night. It was still raining about 8.30pm Monday, but “not as significant as before”, Caldwell said.

Toni Ferris, who runs a local Facebook group for Feilding residents, said her mother told her that rain in the wider Feilding area had been “quite heavy” and many people were sharing posts about flooding on social media.

A police spokeswoman said police had been made aware of several reports of flooding in the Feilding township. At 8pm on Monday police were still alerting council staff and contractors to reports.

According to MetService, the forecast for the Manawatū district for Monday was scattered rain. Thunderstorms and downpours were also possible, it said.
