Todd Crawshaw is the new executive director of the Edmonton Jazz Society which oversees operations of the Yardbird Suite, the city’s long-running jazz venue. He has had cultural leadership roles at the Royal Alberta Museum, CKUA Radio, and as Executive Director for the Rock and Roll Society of Edmonton producing a classic rock fest as well as directing a children’s music education charity. He has been a marketing instructor in MacEwan’s Arts and Cultural Management Program and during the recent pandemic shutdowns created an online radio station called Big E Radio ( bigeradio.com ), to give his friends in performance and promotion a reason to keep going while they couldn’t gig. He has built a jazz/soul/fusion show each Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. called Fuse ‘n Flow.

Some sort of political advisor/strategist. Our contemporary governments need some help

Who’s your hero?

Definitely my dad; he taught me that a lot of good can be created from the smallest of interactions

Last book you couldn’t put down?

An old Robert Ludlum novel, The Road to Gandolfo

Who was your childhood celebrity crush?

Elizabeth Montgomery; watching Bewitched reruns after classes was a routine through elementary school

What’s playing in your iPod (CD, cassette or eight-track) right now?

Tom Waits – Nighthawks at the Diner

If you could see one concert, what would it be?

Very specifically, each of the four nights in L.A. in 1983 from which Talking Heads created the album/film Stop Making Sense

What’s the best thing about Edmonton?

The people, particularly the same volunteers I see at so many diverse events

What’s your weirdest habit?

Perpetually fidgeting with post-it notes and/or blue sticky tack

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Loud chewing…. It’s like a drill to the forehead

What’s your fast-food guilty pleasure?

The Salisbury burger & tater tots from Burger Baron

What was your most embarrassing moment?

I gave a presentation to a few dozen inmates at the Edmonton Max; I tripped while walking up to the stage and covered myself and a priest in coffee. The incident turned out to be the ideal ice-breaker in that situation

Which person, alive or dead, would you like to have dinner with?

Miles Davis. The cat was plagued by demons, but processed the sounds he heard around him unlike any other human, and ended up re-inventing music no fewer than 3 times

What’s your favourite vacation destination?

Cuba – the culture & music are enthralling, and the people exude the same warmth as the Sun

What is your favourite TV show?

I’m currently binging on Burn Notice on Disney Plus. Spies, gadgets, comedy, black ops, and the ever-campy Bruce Campbell

What’s your dream car?

1957 Ford Thunderbird

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

The power to heal bodies & minds

What’s the one thing you haven’t done that you’d love to do?

Until today, it was answering 20 questions in the Edmonton Sun. I guess now it’s space travel
