The Hate U Give: Why KJ Apa’s Black Lives Matter drama should be essential viewing

The Hate U Give

This film should be essential viewing for all teenagers (and is already being studied in some Kiwi high schools).

The Hate U Give was adapted from Angie Thomas’ young adult novel of the same name, which is narrated by a black 16-year-old named Starr Carter. Starr lives in a poor neighbourhood, but attends school in an affluent and predominantly white suburb. When she finds herself at the centre of a police shooting, Starr battles through uncomfortable conversations with her white friends, grapples with privilege and learns to use her voice when it comes to fighting for justice.

If noughties nostalgia is what you want, this will take you there.

The workplace sitcom takes place at Sacred Heart Hospital, where a group of wannabe doctors consistently find themselves in ridiculous situations. You’ve got your daydreaming main character J.D. (Zach Braff), his goofy bestie Turk (Donald Faison) and bright spark Elliot (Sarah Chalke), plus an assortment of familiar faces in supporting roles.

As with many relics of the past, a number of characters and gags haven’t aged well. Take those cringe moments as an opportunity to reflect on how far telly has come in the last two decades.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now available to stream on Disney+

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

This sitcom centres around “the gang” – a group of four alcoholic friends and a dad (played by Danny DeVito) who run a bar in Philly called Paddy’s Pub. They’ve all got narcissistic personality traits, they consistently find themselves in trouble with all kinds of colourful characters and – above all else – somehow still manage to get along (mostly).

Fun fact: This FX series has been going for 15 seasons! It’s literally record-breaking. What a phenomenal feat. That in and of itself seems like a great reason to get watching.

The Cascabel Rattlesnake is amongst the world’s deadliest snakes.

World’s Deadliest Snakes

I’ll admit I don’t know much about this show, but doesn’t the title sound enticing? Like, my heart rate is climbing just thinking about it.

In all seriousness, if you wanna know more about how snakes go about their days, slithering around – preying on other animals and what not – then this is the show for you.

It’s like true crime-meets-David Attenborough, or maybe a science lesson for people over the age of 18. Whatever way you look at it, this National Geographic series looks quite interesting, and like a nice break from the relentless pandemic news cycle.

High School Musical 2 is now available to stream on Disney+

High School Musical 2

This is undoubtedly the best of the three films. It’s got the best songs (Gotta Go My Own Way and Fabulous still slap) and the best storyline (Sharpay trying to win Troy over with her money, honey!).

HSM2 picks up where the first film left off. It’s summer, but these middle-class kids need to get jobs if they wanna have any hope of funding their college educations. Sharpay gets everyone a job at her country club in an effort to spend more time with Troy, but, as per usual, things don’t go according to plan.
